Step 1: What’s your Goal as a Creator?

Posted on

your passion's journey

Most people start a blog because they feel an urge to share, teach, or create. But one of the most common mistakes we see is jumping in without asking the most important question:

What’s the ultimate goal here?

Do you want to share your expertise?

Do you want to make money?

Do you want your voice to be heard?

Do you want to build a community?

Or is it something else entirely?

Without that clarity, blogs often stall before they’ve had a chance to grow. Defining your “why” is the first step, because it shapes every decision that comes after: from your content choices, to your publishing rhythm, to how you engage with your audience.

Defining Your Journey

When we say journey, we aren’t using it metaphorically. In this context, a journey is the structured path between your starting point (where you are today) and your end goal (what you want your blog to achieve).

Four Common Creator Goals

Every creator is unique, but most goals fall into a few broad categories.

1. The Creative Journey

You want a space to express yourself. Blogging for joy, storytelling, documenting your journey, experimenting with formats. Your path is about freedom, creativity, and leaving behind a body of work that matters to you.

2. The Authority Journey

You want your voice to be heard. Maybe you’re a founder, coach, or professional looking to establish credibility. Your path will focus on thought leadership, consistency, and building a recognizable identity around your expertise.

3. The Community Journey

You want to bring people together. Maybe your blog is about a shared passion, a movement, or an idea bigger than yourself. Your path will be about sparking interaction, fostering co-creation, and building belonging.

4. The Monetization Journey

You want your blog to generate income. That could mean selling products, offering services, running ads, or building sponsorships. Your path will be about understanding your customer journey and aligning your content with what people are ready to buy.

Why This Step Matters

Your goal determines your roadmap. Someone aiming to monetize needs a very different approach than someone writing for creative expression. There’s no single “right” way to blog, there’s only the way that aligns with what you want to achieve.

What’s Next

Once you’ve established your end goal, the natural next step is to find your niche — the focus area that will make your blog stand out and resonate with the right audience. We’ll cover that in our next post.

From there, with your goal and niche clear, you’ll be ready for a deeper dive into the different creator journeys. Think of it as stitching together the pieces you need, building a personalized path that aligns with your “why” and “where.”

Co-Creation: Your Turn

This Academy isn’t a one-way street. Take a moment to write down your own goal. Then, if you’d like, share it in the comments. Seeing each other’s goals can spark ideas, encourage collaboration, and remind us that there are many ways to succeed as a creator.
